Making Your Home Medical Weight Loss Friendly
July 2013
When we’re constantly surrounded by junk food, it can be hard to keep ourselves from eating it. When we’re constantly surrounded by healthy food choices, however, eating right becomes much easier.
Because your environment can have a strong influence on your eating decisions, it will help to make your surroundings as healthy as possible during medical weight loss, and your home is a great place to start. Home is where we make many of our meal choices, and it’s also a place where we have a great deal of control.
Turning your home into a healthy haven for your weight loss diet can help you stay on the right track, and you can do so in two simple steps:
Step One: Out with the Old
Is there a box of Twinkies hiding in the back of your pantry, or a case of soda still lingering in your fridge? Because these unhealthy treats have no place in your weight loss program, they now have no place in your home—keeping them around will only tempt you to indulge.
It’s time to get rid of all of the fatty, sugary, processed junk you may still have hanging around. Try donating these items to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank or the World Harvest Food Bank, or look for a food drive near you. Regardless of how you get rid of them, one thing is for certain: they’ve got to go.
If you don’t live alone, this step may be met with some resistance. Roommates, spouses and children may not be pleased to see their favorite junk food go, and that’s OK. Just ask that these unhealthy items be kept somewhere out of sight and out of mind so you won’t be tempted to eat them.
Step Two: In with the New
Once you’ve made some room with step one, it’s time to fill your surroundings with better choices. If you’re on an OPTIFAST diet, this means your shakes, bars and soups. If you’re on a normal food diet, this means things like fresh fruits and veggies, lean proteins and whole grains. Put these foods right up front in your fridge and pantry to make the healthiest options the easiest to grab.
These two steps can help you eliminate temptation and stay in control of your diet, but you don’t have to stop there. You can also encourage yourself to exercise more by giving yourself workout options at home, or work on extending your healthy eating environment to the office as well.
