What are Migraines?
A migraine headache is an intense, throbbing pain in one area of the head. These headaches can last for hours or even days and can cause a significant amount of pain. This pain is usually accompanied by a large variety of symptoms. Some migraines will progress through 4 stages beginning a few days prior to the actual migraine, but you won’t always experience all of the stages.
Symptoms that may occur a few days prior to a migraine and may signify the onset of one include:
- Uncontrollable yawning
- Constipation
- Irritability
- Food cravings
- Depression
- Hyperactivity
- Neck stiffness
Symptoms of a migraine may include:
- Auras (visual or sensory disturbances)
- Sensitivity to light
- Pins and needles sensation in the arms and legs
- Nausea and uncontrollable vomiting
- Blurred vision
- Lightheadedness or fainting
After a migraine you may feel drained or washed out.
What Causes Migraines?
There is no exact cause of migraines, although environmental and genetic factors seem to be the most likely explanation. Changes in the brainstem and imbalances in brain chemicals are also thought to be involved in the development of migraines. Other common triggers of migraines include:
- Certain foods or food additives
- Certain drinks
- Hormonal changes in women
- Stress
- Medications
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Changes in environment
Treating Migraines
The goal of migraine treatment is to manage the acute pain and symptoms that occur with migraines and alleviate the triggers that cause them. So, the first step towards treating migraines is to determine the origin and alleviate the triggers. In many cases, releasing the fascia and muscle tension that is common in those who suffer from migraines helps reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. There are several treatment methods to do this including:
- IV therapy
- Trigger point injections
- Myofascial release
